A body scan is one of the first steps Nike takes to get to know you as an athlete. It works by turning you into a 3D avatar, to give you a detailed look at measurements like inseam, chest girth and calf girth, which results in accurate apparel sizing.

“It is the physical exam of a lab. In a sense, it is the only standardized series of collections we do here, which means it’s the same for every single person that comes through it. That gives us the opportunity to compare it across huge populations. It’s rather than a mile deep and an inch wide, this goes a mile wide and inch deep. So we learned the same thing for everybody. It then gives us an opportunity to learn a little bit more about our athletes that doesn’t rely on self-reported information. We’re not super great at self-reporting our own information. So this is a chance to actually put numbers behind it and say, oh, this is actually how this person moves, or this is their actual size. In the lab we say, measured versus reported sizes. And those things can be very different, which is helpful to know from this place. So we start in a body scan room. We actually turn you into a little 3D avatar. We get really detailed apparel sizes. So it’s everything from, I mean, not only just your waist, your inseam, your chest girth, but we’ll get how long are your arms and how wide are your elbows and thigh girth and calf girth and all the sort of stuff that you never thought you ever needed to know about yourself.” – Jackie Shea
