The first Nike shoes were sold out of vehicles

Vehicles like the Plymouth Valiant and Winnebago had prominent roles in Nike’s history. Phil Knight sold shoes out of his trunk. Geoff Hollister would pull the RV up to track meets where runners could try on shoes. They set the tone for a culture of risk-taking and entrepreneurship that carries on today.

The Slant Six Conference Room is designed to resemble the hood of a car - specifically, Phil Knight’s Plymouth Valiant which ran on a Slant Six engine. When Knight returned from his trip around the world in 1963, he purchased the car for less than $1800 dollars. It would more than make up for it.

In 1967, Knight hired Oregon student Geoff Hollister to sell running shoes on commission. Blue Ribbon Sports had outgrown the trunk of Knight’s Valiant. So Hollister upgraded to a Winnebago and drove it all over Oregon. Today, this replica sits in the middle of the maker space.
